Hikone Castle is an early modern castle that began construction in 1604 and took about 20 years to complete. It was once a large citadel that included triple moats, an artificial river (now Serikawa River), and a castle town. In the area from the inner moat inward, the planar structure of the castle composed of stone walls has been preserved in an exceptional condition. This led to its designation as a Historic Site in 1951 and later as a Special Historic Site in 1956, marking it for careful protection as a national common property.
The entire structure of Hikone Castle is preserved in excellent condition and is considered a representation of the political system of the Edo Period (1603-1867).
It is also found on the tentative list of World Heritage Sites in Japan, aiming to be classified as one.

There are three entrances: the front gate ticket booth, the Otemon gate ticket booth, and the Kuromon gate ticket booth.
The front gate ticket booth is closest to JR Hikone Station.
Those who are unsure of their stamina should take the climb slowly. It is a 50-meter climb in elevation to the main keep with about 140 steps. Furthermore, the stairs are slightly irregular to prevent all the enemy soldiers from rushing up at once during an attack. The climb may even be slightly taxing for younger people who do not exercise daily.
Free cane rentals are available at each ticket booth for those who may require one.
In order for Hikone Castle to retain its original appearance, no barrier-free designs, such as ramps or elevators, have been installed to make it accessible. Unfortunately, what can be seen from a wheelchair is limited to the area around the moat, Hikone Castle Museum, Hikone City Museum of History, and the pleasure boat.
Genkyu-en Garden is also accessible, though it features stone-paved and gravel pathways.
